Storm

This limited edition broadside is a collaboration between artist Leslie Butterfield and poet Teresa Carson, who co-founded Art in Common Places and wanted to give something back to at least some of the people who have made its success possible–e.g., the volunteers who manage the location change-outs; Halo Arts Project which gave them much needed financial support.

Leslie’s statement: My painting “Standing Watch” depicts the osprey mother in her nest atop a light pole surrounded by dark and lightening, afraid yet bravely watching over her young. It is a continuation of the collage projects I have been doing lately that examine the painted medium and also offer me the freedom to compose with loose elements, most of which I painted separately.

Teresa’s statement: Leslie’s painting of the osprey mother standing watch during a storm deeply touched me. While I’m not a mother, I’m in awe of how mothers will go to impossible lengths to protect their children. I hope this poem captures my admiration for them.
